A LIFETIME OF GIVING

A LIFETIME OF GIVING

In the mid-1950s, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange faced the daunting task of raising $2 million to begin construction of their new hospital in Fullerton. As people stepped forward to organize the community and raise necessary funds, Duane Winters, a young businessman, stood out as he worked alongside fellow civic leaders to bring their ambitious vision to life.

Several years after the hospital opened, Duane met and married Doris Hill, a UCLA graduate with a degree in business administration. The couple built an enduring life together, deeply rooted in their shared values and profound commitment to serving their community.

Together, they served multiple terms on the St. Jude Memorial Foundation Board and played active roles in nearly every fundraising committee and support group. Whether St. Jude was expanding the west wing, the north tower, or adding a new cancer center, the Winters were always among the first to give, and give generously.

Duane, a long-time sports enthusiast, especially when it came to baseball, connected easily with others and used those relationships to strengthen the community around him. His background in civic service and politics made him a natural advocate for the causes he believed in. Known for his passion and commitment to philanthropy, Duane was instrumental in garnering widespread support for St. Jude.

A woman of deep faith and strong Midwestern roots, Doris was admired for her humility and quiet dedication. She rarely spoke about her contributions and preferred to focus on the work still to be done. Even into her later years, she remained active on committees, supported her church, and participated in service projects. Friends recall her belief that keeping busy was the key to a long and meaningful life. She lived out this philosophy well into her 90s and beyond.

Before Duane's passing in 1993, Doris and Duane arranged a substantial planned estate contribution to benefit St. Jude, reflecting the couple's enduring commitment and love for the hospital they had supported since its founding. This extraordinary gift will ensure the hospital remains a source of healing and hope for future generations.

Those who knew Doris and Duane best often return to a simple phrase engraved on Duane's headstone: "He touched the lives of many." It is a sentiment that perfectly captures the life they built together. Humbly, consistently, and with great heart, Doris and Duane Winters made a difference in the lives of countless individuals in their community. Their legacy of compassion and generosity continues to inspire others, ensuring their spirit of service endures for generations to come.
